The word 'zombie' is not used by Dying Light's publisher, Warner Bros. Interactive. The 'infected', who are the victims of an unidentified 'outbreak', are the enemies the player must defeat in the Polish title. To survive, players must find equally ambiguous "supplies" as they navigate an open game world. Players can make weapons to protect themselves from the increasing number of infected people using these same supplies.

There is a day-night cycle in the game. It is reasonably safe during the day, and players can look for supplies. The infected are much more active at night, so it's best to seek cover. The game marks Warner and Techland's first joint venture. The studio's most well-known works are the Dead Island games it produced for Deep Silver and the Call of Juarez games it created for Ubisoft. The player battles infected opponents in the Dead Island games as well.
