The visuals might be appealing, but the single-player campaign of Empire of the Ants is quite disappointing and monotonous. Spanning about 12 hours, the missions fluctuate between being frustratingly easy—thanks to an enemy AI that fails to utilize its abilities to enhance its forces, which is essential for victory—and suddenly becoming excessively challenging, with no option to save during missions. One particularly aggravating mission features nine waves of enemies attacking from all sides, where losing control of just one of the seven nests you need to protect results in an instant failure. With so many nests to manage, upgrading them all effectively is nearly impossible. The final wave is especially tough, requiring multiple restarts just to get past the overwhelming numbers.
