Old World game is a historical strategy game that allows you to guide your empire through generations, crafting a legacy that endures beyond your lifetime. This period is filled with remarkable leaders, both admired and feared. Which type will you embody?

While many 4X games attempt to cover the vast expanse of human history or explore our far-off future in space, Old World narrows its focus to the ancient Mediterranean, creating a uniquely epic narrative. This concentrated approach allows for more personal and nuanced stories about human society, in contrast to the broader themes often found in the Civilization series. However, this depth can also make the game feel a bit more complex and challenging, especially at the beginning.

Old World serves as an advanced course for players who are already familiar with Sid Meier's Civilization. Although it spans a smaller historical timeframe, it builds upon the Civ framework and introduces a variety of new mechanics. Most of these additions are intriguing twists, but they can sometimes be presented in ways that feel less intuitive. A key feature is the inclusion of named characters and noble families, which introduces a "Crusader Kings Lite" element to both your domestic and foreign affairs.

It's unfortunate that the game loses some momentum towards the conclusion. The victory conditions are, to be honest, a bit lacking and not very well explained. The main way to win is by accumulating 52 points before 200 years elapse, which you achieve by developing your cities and constructing wonders. If no one reaches 52 points, the player with the highest score takes the win. You can also secure an early victory by doubling the points of the next closest nation, but only if you're already halfway to 52.

Additionally, there's the Ambition victory, where you succeed by completing ten personal objectives. If you don't finish them in your lifetime, they turn into temporary legacy goals for your heir to tackle, provided they act quickly. Lastly, you have the option to eliminate all your opponents. Overall, it feels a bit mechanical and more game-oriented than I anticipated. I was fortunate that my first victory coincided with my conquest of my rival, Rome, because without that moment, it wouldn't have been particularly memorable.

Even with its somewhat understated victories, Old World stands out as an excellent 4X game, and I would actually recommend it over Civilization right now. It represents a true advancement for the genre, featuring numerous innovative and clever design choices. I can't believe I got to the end of this review without mentioning the outstanding soundtrack by composer Christopher Tin. While Civ 4's Baba Yetu remains my favorite of his works, Old World is filled with beautiful orchestral and choral pieces. There's so much to appreciate here, and if you're eager to conquer the ancient world, you definitely need to give this game a try.
