Shadow Empire, While browsing YouTube back in the summer of 2020, I stumbled upon a video of our friend DasTactic playing an odd game that suspiciously resembled a military simulation in the vein of The Matrix. Upon deeper examination, it was discovered to be a 4X strategy game with post-apocalyptic sci-fi elements that heavily featured wargaming. I asked Rob if he had heard of it, and he told me that I was right about the publisher's guess. We had just received a preview copy from Slitherine, and since this one seemed like it would be perfect for me, he gave it to me instead. He realized that this wasn't a game that could be learned in a few afternoons.
After hundreds of hours of play, a YouTube video series, and a 14,000+ word preview piece, I still can't say that I truly understand Shadow Empire, but as expected, it has grown to be one of my all-time favorite games.
Following the publication of that first review, the game was released, first to Matrix and then, back in December 2020, to Steam, where it proudly made its way onto Valve's "top sellers" list for the month, competing with AAA heavyweights Medal of Honor, DragonQuest XI, and Cyberpunk 2077. For any strategy game, that would have been a remarkable accomplishment, but for one of this complexity, it is simply amazing.
The ambitious combination of a modern hex-based wargame typically limited to World War II simulations and other historical conflicts, and a terrestrial sci-fi 4X game in the style of Alpha Centauri is Shadow Empire, the brainchild of Vic Reijkersz of VR Designs and a laborious evolution of both Advanced Tactics Gold and the Decisive Campaigns series. The aforementioned preview article covered the game's features in great detail; therefore, the emphasis here is on the changes that have occurred after the game's release.
Bug fixes and optimization, balance, and new content are the three main categories into which Shadow Empire updates fall. Although the first is routine, it should be noted that the developer has put a lot of effort into making the game ready for a Steam release. While careful users continue to report the odd obscure issue, Shadow Empire is stable and functions flawlessly.
It is necessary to bring up one point here. Although there is a discernible pattern in the post-release development cycle where Vic adds a feature or makes a tweak in optional beta versions, which is followed by a noticeable increase in turn processing times and later stabilization for a major update, turn processing times can still be excessively lengthy for players.
This is arguably the game's largest issue at the moment, and how it affects you depends mainly on the type of games you often play. When the AI's thinking time grows on the larger maps as the endgame draws near, less war-focused 4X players who are accustomed to lengthy games with quick game-round turnover may object to the wait.
Examining modifications made to the main game to fix other problems makes things appear better. Shortly after I wrote my preview, the logistics system was completely redesigned. Previously, logistics points were pushed out along roadways, necessitating heavy traffic management to deliver supplies across your road/rail networks and cover demands made in certain areas of your territory.

Shadow Empire is a complex 4X turn-based wargame that combines role-playing elements, randomly generated content, and a military theme in a distinctive way.
Shadow Empire is the most inventive 4X game to come out since Distant Worlds: Universe, and while it is still not flawless, its overall form is better than when I first saw it. Without hesitation, I give it an exemplary rating, placing it in a very select group of excellent games that push the genre's limits into novel and fascinating areas
