Shadows of Doubt, Since one of the closest buddies is already dead, the two of them launch a paranormal investigative company together in the novel The Phantom Fellows. A fully generated sci-fi noir city serves as the setting for the detective stealth game Shadows of Doubt. You have been given the task of apprehending the serial killer by any means necessary, provided that you maintain a low profile. Each building's rooms can be explored thanks to a special combination of procedural creation and hand-crafted design. As you observe from the Shadows, citizens go about their lives without the player's assistance, looking for important information.
My options become almost limitless after that. I could ask the victim's coworkers what they heard at the time of the murder, use an address book to locate the victim's closest friend's house, hack their computer to view their email correspondence or bribe the building's security to allow me to view the CCTV footage from the hallway (or simply break into the CCTV room if they're not amenable).
Shadows of Doubt comes to life in these situations. Even though the suspect's motivation is rarely a factor or particularly complex, the investigations are clever and cohesive despite being procedurally generated, and they always require some analytical skill from the player. Having to directly determine a sniper's location by analyzing bullet trajectory or deciding which suspects to cross off my list as more information becomes available excites me as someone who enjoys real investigative mechanisms like those in Return of the Obra Dinn. In a less good game, your character would snarl, "Hmm, I guess the vicar's wife has an alibi," or just tell you where the shot came from as soon as you noticed the bullet hole.
For a while now, Shadows of Doubt has been available on Steam in Early Access. It appealed to prospective detectives because it was a realistic, rain-soaked, noir, dystopian city with hundreds of non-player characters leading full, connected lives and committing numerous crimes that your tenacious P.I. could uncover. Now that the entire version 1.0 is available (along with other console versions), Shadows of Doubt is showing up in what appears to be its actual form. The result is a very remarkable story generator that falls somewhere between Raymond Chandler and Philip K. Dick, yet it is rife with mistakes and unnoticed details that frequently make me feel more homicidal than any of the suspects.
I found myself battling the game nearly as much as I was playing it because of these kinds of mistakes, which weren't just frequent but also persistent. Furthermore, a lot of the gameplay outside of the research mechanics feels undeveloped or poorly explained, although they are excellent. Hunger and nausea are acceptable status effects because this is an immersive simulation, but customizing your apartment is a boring and useless exercise. The sandbox builder, which allows you to create cities to play in, was completely broken, and the lengthy list of storylines you could choose from ended up being just one story and a narrative-free sandbox mode. The menu's blank space speaks for itself.
