Undead West is a top-down bullet-hell roguelike that invites comparisons to Enter the Gungeon, though it may lean a bit too heavily on its influences. There’s significant potential in the game, but based on my current playthrough, it seems to need a bit more refinement.

The narrative of Undead West is decent, albeit somewhat simplistic, and regrettably, it is primarily conveyed outside of the gameplay itself. I came across a detailed story summary in a Steam post, but there’s little within the game to illustrate it. You assume the role of a gunslinger who frequently takes on bounties. Before the game’s events, you confront the Man in Red, a seemingly supernatural figure, and are defeated in a duel. Death appears before the Gunslinger, revealing that the Man in Red is merely a vessel, inhabited by a Nightmare that escaped from its underworld prison. Death then offers the Gunslinger a second chance to pursue the Man in Red, setting the stage for the adventure.

Undead West Gameplay:

The fundamental gameplay is quite enjoyable, but this is where I unfortunately encounter several issues. The primary and most significant problem is the noticeable lack of balance and refinement in various aspects. You take on the role of the previously mentioned gunslinger, who begins each run armed with a basic and rather unimpressive revolver, along with a simple whiskey that temporarily boosts your movement speed when consumed. Each run consists of six stages, each featuring a vertical arrangement of rooms filled with traps and enemies.

There is a frustrating inconsistency in the design of many rooms; some present a compelling challenge with well-placed traps and enemies, while others feel haphazardly constructed, often restricting movement and making certain damage instances feel unfair. This issue is compounded by other problems, such as unpredictable enemy spawns and attack patterns, as well as the absence of invincibility frames upon taking damage, which can lead to runs ending due to minor errors.

Enemies spawn without any warning, often appearing right on top of you and inflicting damage instantly, and certain attack patterns, like the charging and exploding skulls in the first stage, can sometimes defy expectations by charging again immediately after the first attack, resulting in nearly unavoidable damage. Additionally, both enemy and player hitboxes can be difficult to judge, which contributes to a sense of inconsistency in aiming.
