Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, Many RPGs start with the premise that you're just an ordinary person wielding a sword, trying to navigate a bizarre and often dangerous universe. Few settings are as vast and unforgiving as Warhammer 40K. That's why I was thrilled to discover that Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader places you in the impressive boots of a Rogue Trader, the heir to the von Valancius dynasty and a significant figure in the high nobility of the Imperium. Roleplaying a character of such prestige and wealth over more than 130 hours of intense, tactical combat and exceptional quest writing offers a refreshing power fantasy within this universe and genre. However, I do wish it wasn't riddled with more frustrating bugs than there are daemons in the Warp.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Free Download
Rogue Trader is an enormous, somewhat unwieldy CRPG. Much like my grand, gothic voidship, the Fortunatrix, it doesn't shine with perfect polish. On the upside, similar to Baldur's Gate 3, nearly all of the extensive side quests and optional activities feel meaningful rather than like mere filler. Developer Owlcat's earlier titles, Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous, included many tedious battles that felt like time-wasters, but every encounter in Rogue Trader’s lengthy campaign offers tactical challenges that encourage fresh strategies regarding enemies and the use of space and cover. Plus, Rogue Trader has plenty of surprises for 40K enthusiasts in terms of the diverse foes we encounter.
Departing from the Pathfinder rule system that Owlcat closely adhered to in its previous games, Rogue Trader pays tribute to some classic Fantasy Flight Warhammer 40K tabletop RPGs, but it truly introduces a new system crafted from scratch. This intentional design has allowed it to function more effectively in most instances. However, I should caution you that it remains a rather complex system. If you're transitioning directly from Baldur's Gate 3, Larian's take on D&D will feel like a soft, delightful treat compared to this.
